Portfolio / Sample Projects
Shortly after graduating from college, I created this site with the help of a couple of my technical writing friends. It was a place where we kept a blog on topics related to technical communication and offered our services to anyone who needed them. I used Wordpress for content management and 960gs concepts to structure the main layout. Other technology involved: HTML, CSS, PHP, Photoshop, and MySQL.
This version of the site was created shortly after starting college. It was the first time I included my resume and portfolio. It was a simpler site that did not use Wordpress, but it still used a combination of HTML, CSS, PHP, and Photoshop to complete the full site.
Avian Research and Education Institute (2007-Present)
This project was a complete redesign of the Avian Research & Education Institute's website. The project was originally completed as part of the "Visual Rhetoric" class at Miami University. After the project was submitted, the AREI organization selected two websites that they particularly liked, including our submission. Later, I would become their official website developer and created the new design seen here. The site has been customized and integrated with WordPress to allow easy content management, user registration, search capability, and news archiving.
Teacher Resource Booklet: Hefner Zoology Museum (2008)
This booklet was created as part of the final capstone project for the Technical & Scientific Communication major at Miami University. The goal was to create an informative booklet targeted at teachers who may want to bring their students to the zoo for field trips. The project was researched, written, photographed, designed, and edited as a team and finally put together into the final print product. The booklet was created using Adobe InDesign. In addition, I created an online registration system to complement the booklet using PHP and MySQL.
Podcasting with GarageBand (2007)
This print documentation was created for the manager of the Learning Technologies Center at Miami University. This documentation was used in the computer lab to assist students wanting to create a podcast with the provided computer equipment. This project involved consultations and meetings between multiple people as well as hands on involvement and learning of the GarageBand software. The final product was printed and bound on high quality paper. The documentation was created using Adobe InDesign. Additionally, I created an online help version of this documentation using RoboHelp.
Blood Glucose Monitor (2007)
This guide was created for the "Designing and Testing User Documents" class at Miami University. The goal was to create a small quick reference guide that could fit into a small carrying case. Many things had to be taken into account while creating the guide aside from size dimensions. Color, paper, lamination, and binding method were all very important. The final product was spiral bound and laminated for extra protection and longevity. The guide was created using Adobe InDesign.
Access Database Tool and Extensive Documentation (2008)
The main requirement of this project was to create a database tool in Microsoft Access to assist Ethicon Endo-Surgery with audits and segregation of duties responsibilities. The database was designed from scratch and contains dozens of reports, queries, tables, and user interface forms to help users perform their job functions. Finding segregation of duties conflicts was one of the primary functions of the database. Dozens of pages of documentation were created so the tool would remain useful and maintainable in the future. From what I understand, since I created this tool 4 years ago it is still being used today and is held up as an example to other companies for performing similar functions. To protect confidential information, I cannot make this available for download. Please contact me for more information about this project.
In addition to the projects above, I have completed several sets of instructions and documentation projects while working professionally. To protect confidential information, I will not be posting these as samples. Please contact me to better understand the experiences I have had in my career.
